Convergence Lab

Throughout the year I greatly expanded my media writing style. Using various different writing styles to express opinions and news. The convergence lab allowed me to use new styles that I became more familiar with throughout the year. Social media, social network concept.

The busiest shopping weekend of the year spilled over to Cyber Monday on November 27th, but not all companies involved in these special sale days reaped the benefits of a selling boom.

Amazon was the biggest player in this holiday shopping weekend and received 64 million orders over the four day shopping weekend. The online store made over 6.6 billion dollars this season.

Students here on the Salve Regina campus report that a number of them shop on Amazon, but only a small number of them shopped over the sale weekend. Even fewer of these students knew about Small Business Saturday at all.

“Amazon has everything,” said Marco Mongelli, a freshman at Salve Regina University. Mongelli is a student who online shopped during the Cyber Monday sales, and went out on Small Business Saturday but did not purchase anything.

Small businesses had an alright day, according to CNBC Business. No matter how well the event went, it pales in comparison when put next to the weekend that Amazon and other major retailers had.

On November 25th, 108 million shoppers went to small businesses for the American Express sponsored day. A rough total of 12.9 billion dollars was spent. This number is more than what Amazon made over the whole weekend, but these profits are divided by the nearly 29 million small businesses within the country.

Amazon’s numbers went up by 16.5% from last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, but the numbers for Small Business Saturday took a hit. Numbers dropped from a sale profit of $15 billion to under $13 billion this year. This decrease is said to be due to companies like Amazon and Walmart, which thrived over the weekend.

CNBC reports that only 70% of Americans know about Small Business Saturday, but a mere 58% went out on the holiday.

“A state-by-state breakdown shows the most popular small businesses visited on the day were restaurants, bars and pubs (41%), followed by clothing and accessories stores (24%), food stores (23%) and coffee shops (22%),” said reporter Kate Rogers from CNBC.

The “Amazon effect” is a term that is being used to describe how Amazon has dominated the book industry causing many small local shops and some bigger names to close.

Forbes published an article in October of 2015 about local pet stores and other local business. This article involved a pet store owner who talks about the fact that pet supplies can be purchased for cheaper on Amazon and websites like it.

A small business owner, David Moore, says that Amazon is able to sell the products for much less than him because of the cost and markup that small businesses need to put on items to make a profit. However, according to this article, the thing that will keep many local businesses running is creating a connection with their customers and having the expertise to aide in the shopping process.

“They [small businesses] need to create value for interaction, for humans to be with humans” said Michael Grandchamp, Associate Vice President for finance at Salve Regina.

Although Small Business Saturday this year shows a declining interest in the public and shopping local, this does not mean that Amazon will be putting these family companies out of business in the near future.

After everybody had finished sleeping off all of the turkey they ate over Thanksgiving break the students and faculty of Salve Regina University were asked to discuss how Amazon impacted the businesses on Small Business Saturday.

“Yes I am aware …”

That is freshman Salve student Marco Mongelli who participates in small business saturday with his mother. Others like Michael Grandchamp the Associate VP for Finance at Salve Regina University believe that Small Business Saturday is not an effective way for small businesses to try and compete with amazon during the holiday weekend.

“I would say it operates as … “

Grandchamp also believes that small businesses are dependent on companies like amazon but that it isn’t always a beneficial partnership.

“From a number of different perspectives…”

Small Business owner Curt Wilkes believes that many people don’t really pay attention to Small Business Saturday.

“Ummmm I don’t know if…”

Curt Wilkes also believes that big businesses are greatly hurting small businesses because they can offer more at cheaper prices.

“Ohh they definitely due…”

Many believe that Amazon, along with other big businesses in corporate America, are hurting smaller businesses during busy shopping weekends like this past holiday weekend. For Salve News I’m Brett Wilkes

News Engagement

Declining Public Interest in News Media

Interviewing others for information to write about was something that I never experienced. The whole idea of interviewing people to write about their opinions was something completely new to me. Now it is one of my favorite writing styles as it allows you to open your mind and listen to others opinions.

Business Man, Newspaper, Business, Man, Businessman

Declining public trust in news media is leading many to tune out from traditional journalism entirely, but a group of media educators is hoping to spur more young people to pay attention to the news. At Salve Regina, students expressed similar opinions on the role of news in their lives. It is being said that the new millennium is out of touch with the news. Students were asked how often they check the news and 5/5 students said every day. With new technology so available we have news from all over the world in the palm of our hand. When asked how do you check your news freshmen Matt Sylvia responded, “I only use social media preferably using Instagram or twitter. I don’t have the time to watch TV, so being able to check the news on my phone is much more convenient.” In today’s world it seems as if time flies by because of this not as many people are reading the newspaper or watching the news. Sylvia said, “Being in school I have no time to watch the news on Tv, I only get around to it at most three times a month.” This does not stop people from acquiring their news. When asked how she accesses her news Lucienne a sophomore at Salve Regina University responded,” Every morning I check the news on my phone using the CNN app.” Ian Nalpinski responded with a similar response stating,” My only real news source is my phone, I get all my news from snapchat.” Advances in technology have allowed news to be shared in a completely unprecedented way, such as downloading apps onto your phone. There are multiple different news apps which allows people to access the favorite opinions and bias’. Lucienne responded to the question why do you prefer your news from CNN by stating, “I like CNN’s liberal approach to the way that they share their news.” Lucienne was not the only student who had a proffered news channel as Matt Sylvia said he prefers NBC 11 news. When asked why he prefers NBC11 Sylvia said,” NBC11 is local news so it all has some sort of relevance to me, but when watching mainstream news, I feel as if I can’t relate to many of the stories. Many people however would not agree with that statement as we’ve seen local news viewers go down 5%, according to the Pew Research Center.

Crown Plaza Hotel hosts 100 local business vendors Saturday for small business workshop.

As a part of Small Business Saturday, the Crown Plaza Hotel will be hosting 100 local small businesses in an effort to bring Rhode Island’s best to just one convenient location.

Our economy and country live off hardworking small businesses, and events like this help to keep small businesses thriving. With such a variety of vendors some of Rhode Island’s most unique items will be sold.

There are 98,134 small businesses in Rhode Island which makes up for 98.90% of all businesses. Gov. Gina Raimondo stated this when asked about Small Business Saturday, “These businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. We’re investing in their success and making our communities stronger.”

American Express, a primary sponsor of Small Business Association events, launched Small Business Saturday in 2010 with a goal to parallel Back Friday and Cyber Monday post-Thanksgiving sales events. The SBA has reached out to small businesses giving financial assistance to new or existing businesses.

Amy Lewis, small business owner of Providence Pickle Provision, stated this when asked about the event, “It’s a great opportunity for more people to get to know our product and discover other great merchants at the same time.”

The SBA offers free counseling and information on starting or expanding your small business. Women’s Business Ownership Representatives are available through the SBA to inform female business owners.

Salve Regina graduate speaks on refugee crisis

This was my first attempt at a print news article and the event I was assigned to cover was uninteresting to me and many of the audience members. It was a relief to know I was not the only one who felt unengaged and disconnected throughout the presentation.

Students and staff at Salve Regina University piled into the Mercy Center Wednesday, October 11th for a presentation on refugees.

A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order in escape war, persecution, or disaster. Currently, the United States is being asked to take refugees from multiple countries including Syria. President Trump made it clear that he will be quite selective when approving these refugees in an effort to keep his country safe.

The speaker Colleen Cloonan’s voice, from the Sisters of Mercy, filled the room toward what appeared to be uninterested students.

Cloonan was not sure what to expect when she first began working with the Sisters of Mercy.

“I was thinking that a lot of people would be cold. I wanted to work with the Sisters of Mercy but didn’t know how much work they put into everything. Coming and seeing what is actually going completely opened my mind to new ideas,” Cloonan said.

About ten minutes into the presentation, the speaker’s volume drastically decreased. As a result, the audience completely tuned out.

Joey Guarino, a freshman at Salve Regina, said, “I was sitting towards the end of the room and still could barely hear her. There wasn’t a time throughout the presentation where I felt fully engaged to the speaker.”

It seemed as if Joey wasn’t the only student who felt out of touch with the presentation as more than half of the room was either sleeping or looking at their phone. Many of the students were distracted and missed important points brought up by Cloonan, for example, she stated, “We try to get the voices of refugees and migrants available at all times for meetings, I think that is the biggest thing we are able to do.

Last year the New York Declaration was passed with the objective to improve lives and conditions of refugees.

“Don’t close the door to migrants because you might be closing the door to someone who can enrich you,” Cloonan said.

With so much terror happening in today’s world, people from all different corners of the world are turning for help. The most important thing Cloonan believes is that we should help the refugees and try to make their lives better in as many ways that we can.

“Separated children should never be criminalized for the immigration status of their parents,” Cloonan said.

The United States and the Sisters of Mercy will continue to help improve the life of refugees.
